Toner’s Beef & Ale, the last name hanging on the house built in 1926 that stood at the corner of Pennsylvania and Fort Washington avenues in the Upper Dublin Township. The old brick house was built by a chemist who ran a patent drug store on-premises. He later expanded with a soda fountain and gas pumps out front while maintaining living space for his family. By 1933 the original owner had moved his family out, got a liquor license, and reimagined the space as The Brick Tavern. 30-years later John J. Toner bought the tavern for $28,000 and it was reborn as Toner’s Beef & Ale, becoming a popular community watering hole for decades to come before ultimately being demolished and replaced with a bank in 2015.
